Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano is one of the more potent oils in the natural medicine cabinet. It is used to promote a deep level of immunity when you most need it due to its potent purifying qualities. When diffused, oregano is employed to boost immune function especially during cold and flu season, and to support respiratory function to ease excess mucous production. Properly diluted (1% or less), oregano may be used topically to enhance immunity and circulation in the head and sinuses, mouth, and skin. Oil of oregano has also become known for boosting and strengthening immune function and regulating menstruation. (apply as warm compress to abdomen - do not use the essential oil of oregano internally).

In 2002, oregano essential oil was put to the test in an interesting study by researchers in Yugoslavia and the results were published in Nahrung. Among the 13 fungi tested were food poisoning, plant, animal, and human pathogenic species. Oregano essential oil high in carvacrol possessed the best and broadest antifungal properties.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Oregano oil can be an active person's best friend due to its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving actions. When applied topically, it can speed healing and reduce pain of sprains, bruises, tendonitis, torn muscles and other similar injuries. Upon initial application ensure to dilute oregano oil to about 1% with carrier oil.
  • Headaches and migraines: use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil and massage on temples and neck. Can also be used in a hot or cold compress.
  • Natural Immunity: Studies have found that oil of oregano is more effective than goldenseal or echinacea at boosting the body's natural immunity. A couple of drops daily during cold and flu season can help strengthen the immune system and prevent infection. Best used in diffuser, take care not to overuse. Oregano oil is very strong.

  • For cellulite: , use 2-3 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage on affected area regularly.

Cosmetic

  • Mouth Wash: Because of its strength, oregano essential oil is not often used in cosmetics. It can cause minor burns to the skin when applied undiluted. Combined with a carrier oil or in preparations such as lotions or soaps, however, the oil is safe to use topically. Sometimes, the oil is used in home acne remedies to disinfect the area and prevent bacterial growth, but it must be diluted properly to avoid irritation. In other homemade cosmetics, oregano essential oil makes an excellent choice for acne-prone skin, or for use during a fungal infection. It also makes a nice addition to mouthwashes for infected teeth or gums.

Mosquitoes and Bugs

Oregano is one of those oils that is listed as fairly powerful mosquito repellent. Next time you spend outdoors drop a few drops on your clothes and tent to keep bugs at bay. Ensure not to get un-diluted oil on your skin.
